Neil Gaiman really is like the Tim Burton of books. Neverwhere is simply amazing, probably his best. I would steer clear of American Gods though, it is pretty graphic and has a LOT of language.
Also, you need to give some of those weird covers a break. Fantasy and Sci-Fi is great. If you are looking for some suggestions let me know.
